Approach to Art Practice

I have been working as an artist for 13 years following wide experience and a diverse career that has included farming, nursing and teaching.

Inquiry, experiment and exploration are key to my work. My sculpture frequently contains elements of metamorphosis, such as the bird with a fish's tail or a dress which is a girl dancing with flowers in place of her head.

There is inherent irony and tension in my use of unyielding materials (cement, fibreglass and resin, plaster, welded steel) to create pieces which appear capable of rapid movement, such as a snail on a roller skate or a group of fallow deer.

Humour and visual puns play an important part. For example, oxtail bones enlarged to be seat-sized, with their saddle shape invite someone to sit tail to tail; discarded exhaust pipes hauled upright, welded to brake drums lurch like an abandoned, worn out army; coffee-pot jugs operate as a fountain and ‘gossip’ with one another via jets of water.

My pieces are either unique or cast from moulds. Some, such as the Fish bird or Fallow deer are available as limited edition bronze or resin casts.

My work has been exhibited in France, and at the OVADA Gallery, the Said Business School, the QI Club and Habitat, all in Oxford. I contribute to Oxford Art Society shows as a member and take part in Oxfordshire Artweeks Visual Arts Festival every year.
